Valentine’s Day story

Sweetheart Abbey Valentines Day

A Valentine’s Day story

Did you know that the origins of the word ‘sweetheart’ come from Lady Devorguilla and Sweetheart Abbey?

Although beautiful, the story is also a little bit gory for Valentine’s Day!

When her husband died, Devorguilla had his heart removed, embalmed and placed in a casket which she carried everywhere with her.

As well as founding what became to be known as Sweetheart Abbey here in Dumfries and Galloway, she also founded Balliol College in Oxford. A very powerful and influential woman in the 13th century.

If you’d like to know more about Lady Devorguilla of Galloway, we highly recommend getting in touch with Solway Tours. Lesley and Mark are amazing, knowledgable and enthusiastic tour guides. They bring history alive for everyone. (Lesley also makes the most amazing tablet!)

Sweetheart Abbey is in the picturesque village of New Abbey. Thinking of driving the South West Coastal 300 route? Drop in and see the historic ruins for yourself when you’re passing
